Lehigh Valley Hospital’s partial hospital program offers many of the same services provided by hospital (inpatient) care, but does so in a schedule allowing a daily return home. Treatment is typically provided Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Partial hospitalization is an alternative to 24-hour hospitalization that might disrupt your home life. Also, patients who have been discharged from the hospital can utilize partial hospitalization as an intermediate step toward reintegration into the family, work or school, and eventual outpatient care.

How Do We Help?

As with all our treatment services, we view our partial programs as a partnership with you. By combining our skills and commitment with your strengths and self-knowledge, we’ll work together to successfully overcome the stresses you are facing.

From the time you enter our door, you’ll be in an atmosphere of complete trust and security. You’ll appreciate our expertise, and be comforted by our compassion. Our goal is to provide a safe haven, where we can work together on your problems without shame, guilt or judgment. You’ll leave our program with clear information about your current illness, and improved confidence that you’ll be better able to cope with day-to-day challenges.

The first step is to thoroughly evaluate and stabilize your condition. Together, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan. We’ll consult with other caregivers in your life, such as your psychiatrist or family doctor, but only with your permission. Also with your permission, we’ll involve your family so they can support you as you move your life forward.

Length of Treatment

People are typically in our programs about 10 days. Treatment may last two weeks or more depending on your individual needs. Our team will make that decision with you and your family members. Our main goal is to give you the care you need to take the next step in your recovery.

If you need a more flexible treatment schedule, our Evening Partial Program at Adult Transitions is the answer. People in this program come in Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-8 p.m.

The programs consist of a variety of groups and individual sessions that focus on support, education and recovery. The trademark of all our partial programs is a focus on education. Patients and their families leave the treatment experience with skills and tested strategies to continue their recovery and prevent a relapse.

Some of our approaches include:

Group Therapy: Some people are comfortable talking about their feelings while others need to build trust gradually. Our program has different styles of groups depending on your needs and comfort level. All are highly supportive. Being in a group with others who share a similar condition or challenge helps everyone feel less isolated and alone. In group therapy, we work on a range of issues—everything from sorting out your thoughts and emotions to improving your overall lifestyle.

Group education: Structured groups focus on:
  • Social skills and coping with others
  • Stress, grief and anger management
  • Self-esteem and self-respect
  • The facts about your diagnosis, how it’s treated and how it will affect your life
  • Getting the help you need after leaving our program, including support groups and community resources
Medication management: Our psychiatrists will help you stabilize your thoughts and feelings as you learn new coping skills.

Family therapy: Involving your loved ones is a critical part of treatment. It helps them understand your situation and support you in your recovery.
